Phenotypic Convergence in Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) Escaping From Fish Farms: The Onset of Feralization?

نویسندگان

چکیده

The impact of fish escaping from farms may depend on the extent to which escapees adapt natural environment, resemble wild conspecifics, and become feral. Yet, little is known about process feralization in marine fish. We examined phenotypic changes body shape, condition, scale growth profiles sea bass Canary Islands quantified had diverged farmed conspecifics. Most feral sizes that overlapped with those fish, indicating they escaped throughout production cycle. However, 29% were larger than maximum size at harvesting, wild. Analysis showed some grown as fast cultured albeit more variable rates. Feral tended converge towards a similar having streamlined bodies, lower hepatosomatic indices (HSI) cages. Although our study cannot discriminate between plasticity differential mortality escapees, we interpret convergence likely result period initial starvation, plasticity, selection against maladapted phenotypes. Our results warn risks rearing open-net cages suggest could pose threat shallow coastal assemblages, particularly areas where species not naturally found.

Morphological malformations of the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax): Comparison between hormone injected and non-injected fish

In this study, fertilization, hatching and deformation rate of the eggs, and larvae obtained from hormone injected (HI) and non-injected broodstock (NHI), were determined. In the experiment, no differences were observed in the groups’ fertilization rates (p>0.05). Hatching rate was found higher in the HI group (p < 0.05). During the experiment, malformations such as spinal fluid accumulation, s...

Skin mucus proteome map of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax).

Skin mucus is the first barrier of fish defence. Proteins from skin mucus of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were identified by 2DE followed by LC-MS/MS. From all the identified proteins in the proteome map, we focus on the proteins associated with several immune pathways in fish. Furthermore, the real-time PCR transcript levels in skin are shown. Proteins found include apolipoprotein ...

Effects of high food-demand fish removal in groups of juvenile sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)

In self-feeding conditions, a few individual sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax (L., 1758)) display strong activity in striking the food dispenser, whereas the remaining individuals of the group actuate the feeder weakly or never. Here, we investigated the effects of removal of the individuals showing dominant activity on the social and feeding behaviours in groups of juvenile sea bass. Following r...
